| Besides the larger prey, like deer and Dall sheep, smaller prey spieces are also live in the Kingdom. Wild turkeys are common in clearings and hills, adult wild turkeys have long reddish-yellow to greyish-green legs and a black body. Males, called toms or gobblers, have a large, featherless, reddish head, red throat, and red wattles on the throat and neck. The head has fleshy growths called caruncles. When males are excited, a fleshy flap on the bill expands, and this, the wattles and the bare skin of the head and neck all become engorged with blood, almost concealing the eyes and bill. The long fleshy object over a male's beak is called a snood. When a male turkey's excited, its head turns blue; when ready to fight, it turns red. Each foot has three toes, and males have a spur behind each of their lower legs. Male turkeys (toms) normally weigh from 11 to 24 pounds, females (hens) are typically much smaller at 6 to 12 pounds. Despite their weight, wild turkeys are surprisingly agile fliers and cunning, unlike their domestic counterparts. Turkeys are very cautious birds and will fly or run at the first sign of danger. The breeding season is in early spring, and wolves will be able to hear the toms vocalizing from over a mile away, and where there are toms, there are hens. A bite to the neck is the quickest way to kill a turkey. Snowshoe hares can be found anywhere in the Kingdom. For camouflage, its fur turns white during the winter and rusty brown during the summer. Its flanks are white year-round. The Snowshoe Hare is also distinguishable by the black tufts of fur on the edge of its ears. Its ears are shorter than those of most other hares. In summer, it feeds on plants such as, grass, ferns and leaves; in winter, it eats twigs, the bark from trees, and buds from flowers and plants and, along with the Arctic Hare, has been known to steal meat from baited traps. Hares are cannibalistic under availability of dead conspecifics, and have been known to eat dead rodents such as mice due to low availability of protein in an herbivorous diet. It is sometimes seen feeding in small groups. This animal is mainly active at night and does not hibernate. Beavers can be found in the deeper rivers throughout the pack's territory. The beaver is a primarily nocturnal, large, semi-aquatic rodent Beavers are known for their natural trait of building dams on rivers and streams, and building their homes (known as "lodges") in the resulting pond. Beavers also build canals to float build materials that are difficult to haul over land. They use powerful front teeth to cut trees and other plants that they use both for building and for food. In the absence of existing ponds, beavers must construct dams before building their lodges. First they place vertical poles, then fill between the poles with a crisscross of horizontally placed branches. They fill in the gaps between the branches with a combination of weeds and mud until the dam impounds sufficient water to surround the lodge. They are difficult to catch, but not impossible. Since they alarm they rest of their family by slapping their tail on water, creating a loud sound both noticable above and underwater. | |
